Mildred A. Walsh, 89, formerly of Blakely, died Sunday night at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Scranton, under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. Her husband of 58 years was James Patrick Walsh, who died in 2016.
Born in Olyphant, she was the daughter of the late James R. and Mildred Dawson Austin and was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Olyphant, class of 1952. A registered nurse, Millie attained her nursing degree from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Carbondale. She retired from Mid Valley Hospital in the late 1990’s.She was a member of Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, Olyphant and was active with the ladies that made rosaries.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary C. Nolan and husband, Randy, Olyphant; three sons, Anthony T. and wife, Barbara, Elkridge, Maryland.; Daniel J. and wife, Meghan, Eynon; and Richard A. and wife, Melanie, Blakely; eight grandchildren, Megan Gawat and husband, Adam; Erik Nolan and wife, Amanda; Tyler Nolan, Abigail, Tessa, Emily, Mollie and Caitlin Walsh; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Gabrielle Gawat and Leo Nolan; one sister, Mary Hoban and husband, Michael, Maryland; one sister-in-law, Mary Austin, Chicago, Illinois; many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, James, Joseph and William Austin.
Mass will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, Delaware Street, Olyphant. Rev. Scott Sterowski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Blakely.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant. Friends are asked to go directly to the church on Thursday morning.
