Michael S. Russen, 82, a resident of Scott Twp. for more than 50 years, died on Sunday with his family by his side. His wife is the former Barbara A. Lynott. They celebrated their 58th anniversary on Nov. 21.
Born in Olyphant to the late Michael and Helen Grac Russen, original owners of Russen’s Bar, he enjoyed helping his father with the family business. He was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New York University. While working on his master’s, he was employed by the Ford Foundation. Mike, a lifelong republican, served as a Congressional aide to Congressman Joseph McDade for 36 years. He also volunteered for Congressman Don Sherwood and many other political candidates.
Mike was a veteran of the Army and was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was president of the Greystone Hunting Club, a 37-year summer member of Blooming Grove Hunting and Fishing Club and a member of Kingsbury Lodge F&AM, Olyphant. He enjoyed deer hunting in Pike County and various other locations, fly-fishing, gardening and raising beef cattle on the family farm. He was an avid reader and he loved all his animals, especially Winston.
He is survived by a son, Michael J. and wife, Suzan, of Scott Twp.; son-in-law, Kevin J. Crowe, of King of Prussia; a brother, John Russen and wife, Joan, of Horseheads, N.Y.; grandchildren, Emily and husband, Dr. Shawn Bifano, of Palmyra; Erica Russen, of Scott Twp.; Conor, Kevin and Martin Crowe, of King of Prussia; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kyra L. Crowe, who died on May 1, 2012.
Divine Liturgy will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 River St., Olyphant, with the Rev. Nestor Iwasiw, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant. Parastas services will be held.
Friends are requested to go directly to church the morning of the funeral.
