Ann Durkin, 89, of Olyphant, died Monday morning at the Gardens of Green Ridge, under the care of Compassionate Care Hospice. She was the widow of Gerald F. Durkin, who died in 1994.
Born in Scranton daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Ferrick Tobin, she was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, in West Scranton, and St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. She completed her training at St. Claire’s Hospital, New York, N.Y., before returning to Scranton, where she worked for a time as a private duty nurse. She proudly served as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s Center for more than 25 years, where her nursing skills and compassion for the residents was always on display. For a time, she also owned and operated several businesses with her sister-in-law, Ann Durkin Kane, “Ann’s Style Shop” and “Ann’s Children’s Wear,” both in Olyphant. She was a faithful member of Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, Olyphant.
Surviving are five children, Atty. Gerald Durkin Jr. and wife, Eileen, Cresco; her long time caregiver, Peggy Durkin, Olyphant; Ellen Zielinski and husband, Bill, Annapolis, Md.; Bob Durkin and wife, Sherry, Olyphant; Fran Glennon, Exton; and 10 grandchildren, Atty. Elizabeth Cassady, Catherine, Sarah and William Durkin, Molli and Bryan Zielinski, Jessica and Kevin Durkin, and Michael and Kelly Glennon; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann Durkin Kane, Eileen and Oscar Lange, and Maureen Tobin; and many dear nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Owen Thomas; and sisters, Marian “Mem” Mackarey, Dorothy “Cissie” Douaihy, Margaret “Peg” Tobin; and brother, Atty. Thomas Tobin.
The family would like to thank the staff and fellow residents of the Gardens of Green Ridge, and the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, for their kindness and care in her final years and days.
The funeral will be Wednesday, from Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant, with Mass of Christian burial at Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, at 9:30 a.m. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. The family requests that those attending the funeral Mass, proceed directly to the Church.
