Francis James Jurkiewicz, 79, of Olyphant, died on Friday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. His wife is the former Florence Kulick. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on January 9, 2003.
Born in Dickson City, he resided in Olyphant since 1946. His parents were the late Francis and Rose Laskowski Jurkiewicz. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Olyphant and a graduate of Dickson City High School. He retired from Specialty Records, Olyphant with 15 years of service. He was previously employed at the Eddy Creek Colliery, Olyphant.
He was a U.S.Army Veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was also a member of American Legion Raymond Henry Post #327, Olyphant.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He enjoyed his family and good conversation.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara K. Checefsky of Jessup; one son, Francis J. of Dickson City; two sisters, Frances Grzech and Rita Mazaika, both of Dickson City; one brother, John of Dickson City; seven grandchildren; two great grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Laura Gabrick, Ann Cielski, Stella Gorczyk and Eleanor Dragon.
The funeral will be held at 9AM on Monday from the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Garfield Avenue, Olyphant. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30AM at St. Patrick’s Church, Delaware Avenue, Olyphant. The Reverend Phillip J. Sladicka, pastor, will officiate. Military services will be held by the American Legion Raymond Henry Post #327 at 8:45AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Dickson City.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM at the funeral home. Christian wake services will be held during this time.
