George A. Mamera, Sr., 88, of Peckville, died Wednesday at AseraCare Hospice, MidValley Hospital, Peckville. He was the husband of Beatrice Pilch Mamera. They were married May 26, 1945 and celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.Born August 31, 1916, in Maynard, Ohio, son of the late Anne and John Mamera, Manville, NJ, he was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Olyphant and their Holy Name Society. Before his retirement, he was employed by Tobyhanna Army Depot for 32 years as a heavy mobile equipment mechanic.A Navy Veteran, he saw action in the Pacific at Tarawa, Iwo Jima and survived the sinking of the Destroyer U.S.S. Calhoun at Okinawa. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign nedal and the American Area Medal. He was a member of the VFW Shopa-Davey Post 6082, Peckville.He is survived by twp sons, George, Jr. and wife, Janet of Old Forge; Thomas and his wife, Betty, of Pocono Summit; one daughter, Jean Saslo and her husband, Elmer, of Belle Isle, Florida; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and John Mamera of Manville, NJ and four sisters, Mary Granick, Detroit, MI, Sophie Backus, Dorothy Lasin and Anne Zeban of Manville, NJ.The funeral will be held at 9AM on Friday from the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Garfield Avenue, Olyphant. Mass will be at 9:30AM at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Lincoln Avenue, Olyphant. The Reverend Kenneth Kizis, pastor emeritus, will officiate. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 9PM at the funeral home. Christian wake services will be held during this time.
