Joseph J. Maslar, a former resident of Dickson City for over 20 years, died on Tuesday at AseraCare Hospice at Mid Valley Hospital. He celebrated his 90th birthday on June 25th. Born in Sturges, he resided there most of his life. His parents were John and Anna Olenick Maslar.He retired from General Motors in N.J.He was a member of Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, Jessup, St. Mary’s Church Choir, Dickson City, and Sacred Heart Prayer Group. He was custodian for the Blessed Virgin Mary from Fatima and organized religious retreats at Lackawanna Healthcare Center and Allied Long Term for 30 years. He was also a former president and vice president of the Very Special People.An avid Philly and Yankee fan, he played baseball in the NEP semi-pro league for the Sturges Sluggers and Eynon St. Mary’s in 1938.A loving and caring brother and uncle, he truly loved life and his family. He was very devoted to the Blessed Mother and the Sacred Heart.He is survived by 3 sisters and their husbands: Florence & Frank Hodorowski, Sturges, Mildred & Angelo Migliori and Jean & Adio Mercanti, all of Scranton and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by 5 sisters: Helen Kollar, Pauline Fedorchak, Emma Maslar, Theresa Blake and Marian Maslar and 3 brothers: John, Elmer and David Maslar.The funeral will be held at 9AM on Saturday from the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Garfield Avenue, Olyphant. Divine Liturgy will be at 9:30AM at Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, 313 1st Avenue, Jessup. The Reverend John Sekellick, pastor, and Reverend August Ricciardi, great nephew will concelebrate. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8PM at the funeral home.
