Mary Catherine Durkin

Mary Catherine Durkin, R.N. of Olyphant died early Friday morning at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.  Her parents were Owen and Ellen Howley Durkin.Born in Olyphant, she was a lifelong resident.  She was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Olyphant; a lifetime member of St. Patrick’s Church and was active in the Parish Society.She retired after 37 years of service from Mercy Hospital as head nurse of the cardiac unit.  A graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, she was a member and former president of its Alumni Association.  She was the first president of Catholic Nurses Guild of Lackawanna County.She is survived by two sisters: Eileen D. and her husband Oscar C. Lange of Allentown and Ann and her husband Dr. James Kane of Olyphant; 5 nieces and nephews with whom she resided: Atty. Mary Kane, Portland, OR, James & Theresa Kane, Swoyersville, Atty. Owen & Paige Kane, Hingham, MA, Kerry & John Muse, Watertown, MA and Katie & Jeremy Murphy of New York, NY; 13 additional nieces and nephews: 25 great nieces and nephews; one great-great nephew and many cousins.She was preceded in death by three brothers: Joseph, Gerald and infant, Paul.Mass will be on Monday at 9:30AM at St. Patrick’s Church, Delaware St., Olyphant.  Fr. Phillip J. Sladicka, pastor, will officiate.  Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.  Friends are asked to go directly to the church the morning of the funeral.Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9PM at the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant.  Christian wake services will be held during this time.Memorial contributions may be made to Northeast Cancer Institute, 334 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, PA, 18505-3234.
