Stephen Kurilla, 82, formerly of Peckville for over 40 years, died on Thursday at Community Medical Center, Scranton. His wife is the former Eleanor A. Kondash. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 23rd.
Born in Olyphant, he was the son of the late John “Chickie” and Julia Stevensky Kurilla. He attended Olyphant schools and was a graduate of Johnson Technical School, Scranton, with degrees in drafting and woodworking. He was formerly employed by Mayflower Industries, Jessup for over 35 years and Quality Home, Clarks Summit for 5 years. He was a member of Holy Ghost Church, Olyphant.
A U.S. Naval Veteran, he was an E-4 Petty Officer Third Class stationed as a radioman in Bainbridge, MD.
A dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, he enjoyed wood working, remodeling, golf, bowling, fishing and spending time with his family. He was also a fan of Gene Autry movies and his music.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Markacs and husband Skip, Douglassville; two sons: Stephen R. and wife, Patricia Davey Kurilla of Olyphant and Richard S. and wife, Maureen Marcinkevich Kurilla of Scott Twp.; three grandsons: Stephen & Brian Kurilla and Jason Thomas; five granddaughters: Heather & Suzanne Kurilla and Angela, Jessica & Samantha; one great granddaughter: Taylor; one brother: Edward of Honesdale and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral Mass will be on Monday at 9:30AM at Holy Ghost Church, Willow Street, Olyphant. The Reverend Thomas M. Muldowney will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Francis Cemetery, Eynon.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 5PM at the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant.
