Herbert J. Whitman, 62, of Olyphant, died on Thursday at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Twp . He was the son of the late Herbert Whitman and Mildred Horvath Whitman Mizerak and stepson of the late Joseph Mizerak, Sr.Born in Scranton, he resided in Gouldsboro for 15 years before moving back to Olyphant 15 years ago.He was retired from Tobyhanna Army Depot with 25 years of service.A disabled U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of Vietman, he received a purple heart.He enjoyed hunting & fishing, loved to travel and was a New Orleans Saints fan.He was a member of Gouldsboro American Legion Post #274, Tobyhanna VFW Post 3448, DAV of Dickson City, Italian American Club, Olyphant and a social member of VFW Shopa-Davey Post 6082, Peckville.He will be remembered as a person with a huge heart.He is survived by three sisters: Joyce Bonaddio, Olyphant, Annie Liparulo and husband, Tony, Olyphant and Barbara MacIntosh and husband Bob, Fairfax, VA; two brothers: Edward Whitman and wife, Patricia, Olyphant and Joseph Mizerak, Olyphant; brother-in-law Frank Hudak, Jessup; several nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by and a sister, Carol Hudak.Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9AM from the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant. Mass will follow at 9:30AM at Holy Cross Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, Delaware St., Olyphant.Burial will take place in Union Cemetery, Peckville.Friends may call on Sunday from 5 to 8PM at the funeral home.Contributions may be made in his memory to Marine Corps Toys for Tots, 1118 Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, PA, 18644.Special thanks to Jimbo Creavey, a friend for life.
