Thomas William Coombes, Sr., 81, of Carbondale, died on Wednesday morning at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann J. McGuire Coombes. He was the son of the late Harold and Anna Coombes.Born in Chester, he resided in Carbondale for the last 30 years. A gunsmith by trade, he was a former Chester police officer and a deputy sheriff for Scranton. He was also a U.S. Coast Guard veteran. Tom was an avid collector of John Wayne memorabilia and loved to play poker.He is survived by two daughters: Maryann Coombes, Carbondale and Karen Boyer, NC; three sons: Thomas, Jr., Olyphant, Logan and Michael, both of Carbondale; a sister, Louise, Bethel Twp. and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by 16 siblings of which he was the youngest male child.Graveside services will be held on Friday at 10AM at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.There will be no calling hours.Arrangements are under the direction of Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Garfield Avenue, Olyphant, PA, 18447-1948.For directions or on-line condolences, please visit www.hudak-osheafuneralhome.com.
